Smoking, an earlier menopause

Question :-

I have noticed that I’m putting on weight, and have mild depression but particularly I notice my breasts are constantly painful. I’ve also missed two periods. I’ve recently given up smoking, but chew off the shelf nicotine gum.

Reply:-

Well done on the non smoking

It is thought that Smoker’s experience an earlier menopause than non smokers,

its is believed that smoking may decrease the secretion of oestrogen from the ovaries, also affecting the central nervous system slowing down the production of hormones, contributing to your symptoms, sore breasts, weight gain and general imbalance.

Nicotine may activate enzymes within the liver speeding the remove from the body, so it may be the start of the menopause
