Prominent Heberden’s node

Question:- It is over a year now since a prominent Heberden’s node has appeared on the joint nearest my fingernail on my left index finger. It appears to run a cycle: swelling with inflammation which eventually gives way to releasing a thick fluid and leaving an open ‘wound’ of up to 5mm which slowly heals over. The entire cycle takes anything from a couple of weeks to a month, with no particular rationale and can either begin immediately it ‘heals’ or lies ‘dormant’ for a few weeks when there is no pain/discomfort.

I find it extremely disabling since I am an active hands on person: cooking/gardening/office work/sewing/driving/cycling etc. There are times when it is he swelling is very sore and painful orther than being unsightly.

Reply:-Seek medical advice. Consult your arthritis specialist (rheumatoidologist ) or Gp in the first instance,

but anti inflammatory’s  may help, supplements, such as glucosamine or rose hip, it should be noted that fish oils have been shown to have some anti-inflammation properties.
