Cervical screening

As women approach the menopause they will or should have had at some time had a cervical smear.
Screening prevents or detects cervical cancer, therefore early detection of abnormal cells can be treated accordingly.

These cells are taken from the neck of the womb or cervix  by a wooden spatula, once a speculum, the instrument inserted to inspect the cervix, is then taken  and smeared on to glass plates, these are then sent to the laboratory for analysis, which may take up to 6 weeks for the results

Screening is FREE  to all women

New guidelines for more effective treatment are

25 1st smear

25-49   3 yearly

50-64   5 yearly

65+      if since the age of 50 you have NOT  been screened or have Had previous abnormal tests
